1976 Liner Notes

DAVID – 1976

When listening to David Meece perform his music, it oftentimes sounds as if he were playing and singing on top of a mountain, an open sky as his canopy, with an audience of thousands singing along as company.

And yet, at other times, it is almost as if we were overhearing a private dialogue between David and his Creator.

And yet, at other times, it is almost as if we were overhearing a private dialogue between David and his Creator.

Such is the music of David Meece. His major source of inspiration is the same as that of another psalm-writing David several thousand years ago.

But not only is David a composer. Out of his classical music training has come his mastery of the piano. And out of his love for popular music in a style not only exciting, but also unforgettable.

This album is a collection of that music.

I’LL SING THIS SONG FOR YOU

Words & Music by David Meece

I’d like to sing you a song
I hope you won’t think it wrong
This song for you is all I have left to give
This simple song to let you know how I feel
So I’ll sing –

‘Cause I’d like to share part of my heart
That’s yours wherever you are
I’ve seen you crying so lonely in there
I’ve watched you fall down so many stairs
So I’ll sing this song for you

So much of life is lonely
To let this moment pass you by
And I hope tomorrow you’ll remember
This solemn moment here of ours

And I hope someday you’ll sing me a song
When all the crowds have gone home
And you alone sit there so silently
Watching your own and remembering me
As I sing this song for you
I’ll sing this song for you

COME HOME, AMERICA

Words & Music by David Meece

Don’t you think it’s time we all should believe in
Something more than just a green dollar bill
After all our lives of living and longing
Can’t we listen to that silent and still small voice
Saying “Come home America – won’t you come home to me”

Happy Birthday; oh it’s hard to believe it
That we’ve seen already two hundred years
That we’ve wandered far away from our Savior
And He’s whispering “Come home to me now my children
Won’t you come home America
Won’t you come home to me”
‘Cause Happy Birthday’s not a calendar party
Oh, it means a time when we can begin
To select the life He wants us to follow
And come home again – America come home

Happy Birthday! Oh how I love my country
How I want to see it living again
So let’s start anew; let’s get it together
And we’ll celebrate its birthday with
Lives brand new
Happy Birthday America – Happy Birthday to you
“Won’t you come home America
Won’t you come home to me.”

JESUS

Words & Music by David Meece

All of the words I’ve heard people say
Of all that they’ve known
Haven’t helped me find the way that
Knowing you has shown
Now I can see through you Lord
The path that I couldn’t find
And I feel the sun come shining through
When Lord you’re on my mind

Refrain:
Jesus – You’re my soul and my strength
You’re my everything – You’re my everything
Jesus – You’re my heart and my soul
You’re my life that grows
You’re my heart and my soul
You’re my life and my goals
You’re my heart, my soul, my mind
Everything I need

If they could understand Lord the perfect
life that You’ve lived
How it fell into God’s own plan
Our every sin forgive
You came to show the truth , Lord the way
And how You’re the life
And I feel the sun come shinin’ through
When Lord You’re on my mind

(Repeat Refrain)

And how can I show You how I adore You
No way but live, for You’re gonna reach
And take me home
Jesus, take me to the promised land
All it takes is faith to understand
So take my hand, take my hand
Take my hand – take my hand

(Repeat Refrain)

I LOVE THE WAY HE SMILES AT ME

Words & Music by David Meece
Copyright 1976  Meece Music (admin by) WORD Music

Dew dissolves within the morning light
Tears are falling like they’re rain
Flowers caught beneath an empty sky
Life begins to have no rhyme

Refrain:
I love, I love the way He smiles at me
When I’m down and lost without a friend
Yes I love, I love the way He smiles at me
And tells me it’s alright
And tells me it’s alright

Morning sinks into the noon
Noontime leaves us then the day
The darkness comes, not a rest in sight
Homeless, searching for a hope

(Repeat Refrain)

Few people know just what I mean
When I say my Jesus set me free
And if you’d just believe in Him
He’ll set you free – set you free – free

(Repeat Refrain)

I LOVE YOU, LORD

Words & Music by David Meece

Writin’ songs is ‘bout all I can do well
I can’t build houses but I know I can tell
All the things that I’ve felt
All the love that I’ve held
Since I met You

It’s like nothing that mere words could explain
All the joy I’ve felt since You came my way
You turned my night into day
All my rain into sunny rays

Refrain:
I love You, love You, love You Lord
You’ve cleansed every wrong
A symphony You gave to me
With You I belong
I love You, love You, love You Lord
With You I’ll be strong
‘Cause Your love has given this song

If tomorrow seemed to tarnish and fade
And all the friends I have just turned me away
Skies still wouldn’t be gray
Just as long as I stayed
Right here with You

How I wish that all the people could see
You’re the best thing they could ever receive
They need only believe
And You’ll set them all free to sing

(Repeat Refrain)

TOUCH MY HAND

Words & Music by David Meece
Copyright 1976 Meece Music (admin by) WORD Music

So many people talkin’ so many ways
And can’t agree upon a single thing
My mind’s confused I wish you’d try to explain
What’s been said to my head

I don’t ask for pity; I just wanted to know
How all you learned men could seem so slow
You’ve read your books; your letters;
But you can’t show
Where I’m going, or do you know it?

Refrain:
You touch my hand and talk like you
Know where I am
But you know you’re as blind as I
‘Cause when you fall down the same place
again and again
Oh it makes me wonder – it really makes me wonder

You talk down to me with such an air of contempt
But I can see through you such void,
Such emptiness
And you’re as scared as I of falling again
In this darkness
This deep darkness
This deep darkness

(Repeat Refrain)

It really makes me wonder.

TAKE ME TOGETHER

Words & Music by David Meece
Copyright 1976  Meece Music (admin by) WORD Music

I feel so tired my eyes burn with pain
I know my time has come to smile or make an end
Looks like I’m on my way back to San Quentin
I guess there ain’t  nowhere else to go

Refrain:
So take me together back home to my friends
Take me together so I can see my momma smile
Take me together so I can see their life
And the smile of their hearts
And I know I’ll be alright

You know last night I dreamed I was floatin’
Down the bayou
I dreamed I had a home of my own
The catfish were jumpin’ so high
You could reach out
You could reach out and grab ‘em
I then I woke up,
I woke up and wandered on alone

(Repeat Refrain)

Now I’m waiting in the chamber door
Of tomorrow
Waitin’ for the chaplain’s final prayer to end
You’ve got to take me all together
Dear God, God please take me as I am
‘Cause You know I ain’t got
I ain’t got no one else

So take me together with all the dreams that I’ve had
Take me together or please don’t take me at all
Just let me go on alone
And never find love –
The one thing I’ve never known

GOT TO KNOW YOU’RE THERE (DAVE’S PRAYER)

Words & Music by David Meece
Copyright 1976 Meece Music (admin by) WORD Music

I’ve got to have You there beside me
No matter what it takes to be
I’ve got to feel Your presence ever at my side
Oh I can’t hide all the things You mean to me
Through every moment that I’m living
Through every smile I feel inside
Through every tear that ever trickles from my eye
Oh I can’t hide all the things You mean to me

Refrain:
And I’ve got to know You’re there
I’ve got to know You’re there beside me
Waiting for me, watching o’er me
Guarding all my life

And I’ve got to know You’re there
I’ve got to know You’re there
And I can’t live without You
Love without You
Be without the knowledge that You’re there

And I’ve got this feeling inside of me now
That won’t let go
It tells me of truth – of love-
For everything living is You
In Your strength not in mine
In Your Word, in Your love
Let me be what You want…for all of my life

Then when I think about tomorrow
I know it won’t be yesterday
‘Cause everything I’ve ever done to make You cry
I needn’t hide
‘Cause I know You’re right there by me

(Repeat Refrain)
I’ve got to know You – got to know You’re there
You’re there – You’re there

IMAGINE WHAT IT’D BE LIKE

Words & Music by David Meece
Copyright 1976 Meece Music (admin by) WORD Music

Imagine what it’s be like
If everyone believed in Him
If there’d be no consolation
And nothing to mislead in sin

Imagine no one searching for a reason to exist
Or wondering why they’re here at all
Well you know that it could be so
If the world would only wake up to His call

Refrain:
So take a look and stop your dreaming
Read the Book and start to live
You know it’s really kind of funny
After all that we’ve done wrong
He still waits with a smile
And He still wants to forgive

Imagine every church today
Being what He meant for it to be
No more malice and distrust
And no more lies or blind hypocrisy

Imagine all men everywhere
Praising God and singing with their hearts as one in tune
Well it’s easy to imagine it
But someday soon He’ll make that dream come true

(Repeat Refrain)

So take a look and stop your dreaming
Read the Book and start to live
You know it’s really kinda funny
After all that we’ve done wrong
He still waits with a smile
And He still wants to forgive
